Diversity Awareness Curriculum Plan Coding Criteria

 

To determine the Level of Awareness in your curriculum:

(1) Examine your curriculum assignment(s) and note the number of awareness criteria included. 

(2) Calculate the number of points in each level of awareness. 

(3) Add the overall total points to determine the level of diversity awareness emphasized in the assignment.

 

 

A. Monocultural (Intolerance) Level of Awareness 41.3 points each

1. Curriculum plan includes some language and culture instruction.

2. Curriculum instructional practices use thinking and acting (separately) (status quo is supported)

3. Curriculum plan includes content questions (only): who, what, where, when) 

 

B. TOLERENCE Level of Awareness 5.8 points each 1.Curriculum instructional practices challenge racism and discrimination by emphasizing no stereotyping, name calling, graffiti, blatant racist/sexist jokes, etc. Curriculum plan includes attention to selected information about other groups

2.Curriculum plan includes community projects and activities

3.Curriculum plan includes both content (who, what, where, and when questions) and process (why and how questions).

4.Curriculum instructional materials encourage students to question the status quo. 

 

C. ACCEPTANCE Level of Awareness 5.5 points each

1. Curriculum instructional practices and materials reflect differences.

2. Curriculum includes histories and perspectives of a broader range of people.

3. Curriculum acknowledges the diversity of lifestyles, learning styles, language and values of groups other than the dominant one.

4. Curriculum encourages learning a different language.

5. Curriculum instructional practices and materials acknowledge the role of individuals in social change and the importance of taking part in community service.

6. Curriculum stresses more “why” and “how” questions.

7. Curriculum stresses more sensitivity and cultural diverse understanding of others.

8. Curriculum instructional practices utilize students’ experiences, cultures and languages as one source of learning. 

 

D. RESPECT Level of Awareness 8.1 points each

1. Curriculum emphasizes practices that respect diversity.

2. Curriculum is more explicitly antiracist and honest. Curriculum instructional practices provide a “safe” environment to talk about racism, sexism and discrimination.

3. Curriculum instructional practices and materials emphasize that knowledge is necessary for living in a complex and pluralistic society.  Additive multiculturalism is the goal.

4. Curriculum instructional practices include classroom interactions and materials emphasizing an openness to diversity within the culture of the school.

5. Curriculum instructional practices encourage students to take part in community activities that reflect social concerns.

6. Curriculum instructional practices and materials emphasize both content and process. Students are encouraged to ask, “What if?”  Relationships are built with other students and/or their families.

7. Curriculum instructional practices advocate that students and teachers use critical dialogue to see and understand different perspectives.

 

E. AFFIRMATION/SOLIDARITY/CRITIQUE  Level of Awareness  6.1 points each

1. Curriculum includes instructional practices affirming diversity and challenging racism.

2. Curriculum includes instructional practices that use students’ language and culture.

3. Curriculum stresses the importance of everyone to take responsibility for challenging

racism and discrimination.

4. Curriculum instructional practices encourage students to learn to speak a second language

and become familiar with a broad range of knowledge.

5. Curriculum and instructional strategies stress interactions among teachers, students and community.

6. Curriculum and instructional techniques are based on an understanding of social justice as central.

7. Reflection and action are important components of learning.

8. Curriculum instructional practices include an equal mix of

content and process. Teachers and students are empowered.  Students and teachers are

involved in a “subversive activity.” Decision-making and social action skills are the basis of the curriculum.
